Texas High School Golf: How San Antonio Teams Reach State

How UIL golf works from district to state, how San Antonio-area teams did at the 2026 state tournaments, and the 2027 dates every junior should know.

For a lot of Texas kids, the first time golf really counts is in a school polo, with four teammates and a coach waiting by the 18th green. High school golf is where juniors learn to post a score that matters to someone besides themselves.

In Texas, that season is run by the University Interscholastic League (UIL), and it ends at the state tournament each spring. In 2026, San Antonio-area teams brought home a state title, a third-place finish and an individual state champion. Here is how the UIL season works, how local teams did, and the dates to know for 2027.

How the UIL Postseason Works

UIL golf is played as teams of five players. At district, regional and state, a team's score for each 18-hole round is the best four scores of its five players. Individuals are ranked too, so a strong player can advance even when the team does not.

The road to state begins at district, where each district may send its top two teams and top two individuals to regionals. No more than the last 36 holes of district play count toward qualifying. Regional players usually play 36 holes, and each region may send its top three teams and top three individuals to state. There, the best teams and players from every region meet for the state championship, which is held separately for boys and girls.

Planning Ahead for the 2027 Season

The UIL has posted its 2026-2027 golf calendar, and the spring moves quickly once it starts. Every conference faces a district certification deadline of April 7, 2027. Regional tournaments are set for April 12-15, 2027, followed by the girls' state tournament on April 26-27, 2027 and the boys' state tournament on May 3-4, 2027.

The UIL notes that all dates are subject to change, so check its golf page as the season gets closer.

High school golf is where a junior first learns to post a score that matters to a team.

A Big Spring for San Antonio-Area Teams

Local golf had a big spring, and the UIL's official 2025-2026 state results show just how big. The standout came in Class 5A girls, where Comal Pieper won the state championship with a team total of 596. San Antonio Alamo Heights finished third at 604, and the individual state champion also came from Alamo Heights with a two-round score of 137.

The success reached other classes as well. In Class 6A, San Antonio Johnson sent both its boys' and girls' teams to the state tournament. On the Class 5A boys' side, Comal Smithson Valley posted 596, four shots out of third place, and Boerne Champion also qualified for state.

A Sport That Keeps Growing

Texas leads the country in high school sports participation, with 911,405 participants in 2025-26, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Nationally, golf is one of the fastest-growing sports in those numbers. Boys' golf grew 8.3% to 175,757 players, the largest percentage increase of any boys' sport, while girls' golf grew 6.3% to 90,176.

The National Golf Foundation counts approximately 1,000 more high schools with girls' golf teams than a decade ago. More teams means more kids getting their first taste of real competition.

The School Team Is a Start, Not the Whole Path

High school golf is one of the most affordable ways to compete. But many serious juniors also play summer and weekend tournaments to sharpen their games, and that is where costs climb. A single American Junior Golf Association event costs $95 to $295 to enter, before travel, lessons or equipment.

Practice can be cheap close to home. San Antonio juniors 18 and under can play the city's courses for $5 through Youth On Course, and our guide explains how the $5 junior rate works.

Families new to school golf should talk with the coach early in the year. Ask how the team picks its five players for district and what a player needs to do to earn a spot. Clear answers in the fall make for fewer surprises in the spring.

For juniors hoping to play in college, the odds are narrow. About 5.4% of high school boys' golfers and 6.9% of girls' go on to the NCAA, as we explain in from junior golf to college golf: the real odds.

How FGA Helps High School Golfers

Future Golfers of America was built for exactly this stage. Most of the juniors FGA looks for are middle or high school age, competitive players who are serious about the game but face financial or access barriers. Selected athletes may receive individual support for tournament fees, training, equipment, travel and mentorship.

Coaches see these players every day. If you coach or mentor a talented junior in San Antonio or the surrounding area, you can nominate them for FGA's Founding Athlete Class through November 30, 2026. Our guide for coaches explains how to spot a junior worth nominating.

You can also help from anywhere through the #DriveForJuniors Holiday Drive, which runs through December 31. And look for FGA at the 2nd Annual Underdog Open in April 2027, with the date to be announced.
