No Clubs? No Problem. Low-Cost Ways San Antonio Kids Can Start Golf
First Tee classes with clubs provided, golf in PE class, $1 range buckets and a free national skills contest: more ways San Antonio kids can start golf.
Most kids do not fall in love with golf on a championship course. They fall in love on a practice range, in a PE class or in a small group lesson, the first time somebody hands them a club and says, "Give it a try."
San Antonio already offers young golfers one of the best deals around, $5 rounds on city courses, which we cover in our guide to the city's junior rate. But a full round is not always the right first step. Here are the other ways in, from group classes that supply the clubs to a national skills competition that costs nothing to enter.
First Tee: Clubs Provided, No Experience Needed
The biggest youth golf program in town is First Tee Greater San Antonio, which teaches golf alongside life skills like confidence and resilience. Classes are open to kids ages 5 to 18, regardless of background or experience. Families do not need to own clubs, either. First Tee provides clubs, balls, tees and other equipment, so a child can show up in athletic clothes and closed-toe shoes with a water bottle and be ready to swing.
Kids learn alongside others their age, starting with 5- and 6-year-olds and moving up through groups for ages 7 to 9, 10 to 11, 12 to 13 and 14 and older. Programming runs in six-week seasons. The fall 2026 session ran from September 15 to October 24 with weekday afternoon and Saturday classes, plus daytime classes for homeschool families, so check the website for the next session. Registration is first come, first served.
The home base is the First Tee Learning Center at 915 E. Mulberry Avenue, and the chapter also lists satellite sites including Topgolf San Antonio, Dead Solid Perfect Golf on Blanco Road and Hyatt Hill Country Golf Club, plus Randolph Oaks Golf Club for families with a military ID. Class offerings can vary by site and season. The chapter's reach is wide, too: it says its certification program had served more than 23,000 kids as of 2024.
What It Costs, and How to Pay Less
The standard fee is $125 per child for a six-week season, or $155 for late registration. Cost should not be what keeps a child home, and the chapter says so plainly. It offers full scholarships and reduced-fee programming for families who need financial help, and parents apply right inside the online registration.
There are discounts, too. Families of active duty military, reservists and veterans get 20% off, as do families of first responders and families signing up more than one child.
The chapter's financial aid page is also worth bookmarking for later. It points families to outside grants that help with tournament costs, such as the AJGA ACE Grant and the Jacob Bradley Memorial Scholarship, which covers Texas Junior Golf Tour entry fees and memberships.
Most kids do not need a country club to fall in love with golf. They need someone to hand them a club.
Golf at School and in Youth Centers
Some kids meet golf before they ever set foot on a course. First Tee's School Program brings golf into physical education classes at elementary and middle schools, with lesson plans and modified equipment that is safe for indoor or outdoor use, and it has been in schools since 2004. Fees apply, but First Tee says it works with schools to find funding through sponsors or donations. A parent who mentions it to a PE teacher or principal could be the reason a whole campus learns to swing a club.
The Community Program does the same thing for youth-serving organizations, using games to introduce golf, and the chapter names youth centers like the YMCA of Greater San Antonio as partners. If your child spends afternoons or summers in a youth program, ask whether golf is on the schedule, or could be.
A Bucket of Balls and a Free Competition
Sometimes the best practice is simply hitting balls. The range at the First Tee Learning Center is open to the public from 8 a.m. until dusk every day, and First Tee+ members get medium buckets for $1. When a child is ready to try a few holes, the city's San Pedro and Riverside par-3 courses cost juniors 18 and under just $3 with a Youth On Course membership.
For kids who love a challenge, there is Drive, Chip and Putt, a national skills competition with no entry fee at any qualifying level. Boys and girls compete in four age divisions from 7 to 15, and local qualifiers are generally held from early May through late July, with 353 local qualifying courses listed on its website. Registration for each local qualifier closes five days before the event, so spring is the time to look up the nearest site.
When the Spark Turns Into Something Bigger
These programs are built to open the door, and they do it well. The harder moment comes later, when the child who started in a beginner class is suddenly good enough to play tournaments, and the costs climb with every entry fee, lesson and road trip. Our look at what competitive junior golf really costs explains why so many families hit that wall.
That is the moment Future Golfers of America was built for. FGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in San Antonio that funds talented competitive junior golfers whose families cannot keep up with tournament fees, equipment, coaching and travel. If you know a junior who has outgrown the beginner programs, you can nominate them for the Founding Athlete Class through November 30, 2026. And if you would rather help from the sidelines, the #DriveForJuniors Holiday Drive runs through December 31, with 100% of donations supporting junior golfers directly.
